A GENEROUS AND PROMISING VINTAGE

Exceptional Quality and Generosity

2022 offers us the best that Burgundy can produce: a vintage that is both qualitative and generous! After three years with volumes impacted by climatic vagaries, this vintage is a welcome relief. Although there are small disparities depending on the grape varieties, the vines overall resisted the extreme weather well, taking advantage of every little shower. After a milder and drier winter than average, the first green tips appeared in early April in the early sectors. A cold air mass from the north caused four nights of frost between April 3 and 11. Fortunately, very little damage was observed as most of the vines were still at the "cotton bud" stage.

From mid-April, summer-like temperatures and dry weather favored rapid vine growth. Finally, much-anticipated rains arrived in the form of storms from June 21 to 25. In five days, an average of 50 mm fell across Burgundy, but totals ranged from 20 mm to nearly 90 mm depending on the area. These storms were sometimes violent, causing hail damage over limited areas.

Ripening occurred under scorching temperatures, favoring perfect sanitary conditions. The summer experienced four heatwaves, ensuring exceptional quality.

A Warm Spring and Healthy Vines

After a milder and drier winter than usual, 2022 began with spring frosts. Fortunately, by the end of March, just before the frosts, the vintage showed a few days' delay compared to the average of the past 20 years, limiting the damage.

An exceptionally warm spring marked 2022, with rising temperatures in May accelerating vegetation growth. Full flowering was observed at the end of May and took place under excellent conditions. In May, the Yonne department was placed on drought alert, a situation that continued in July. However, the sanitary condition of the vines remained excellent, with no diseases due to the lack of rain.

Storms between June 21 and 25 brought welcome precipitation, though locally violent, causing limited hail damage in some areas.

Summer was characterized by several heatwaves, favoring perfect sanitary conditions. Drought affected some vines in shallow or sandy soils, but most resisted well. Maturity checks showed good sugar progression, despite some hydric stress in early August. Mid-August rains provided much-needed relief.

Red Wines

Harvest began after mid-August, intensifying around August 20 and extending until the third week of September. The harvest was abundant and of excellent sanitary quality, with surprising juice yields. Like the rest of Burgundy, the Mâconnais experienced a mild and dry winter, followed by early April spring frosts that caused very localized and limited damage, as the vines were still at the "cotton bud" stage. The spring was exceptionally warm, with a significant water deficit in April and May, partially compensated by showers in June. Flowering, starting around May 20, classified 2022 among the earliest vintages. Violent storms at the end of June brought welcome water but also localized hail.

July and August were among the hottest and driest months of the past 30 years, with a peak of 43.5°C on August 4. Some mid-August rains allowed the vines to perfect their maturity despite the water deficit. Harvest began very early, from August 17 for the Crémants, extending until the end of September. Supple and Concentrated for an Excellent Vintage

The Beaujolais vineyard experienced an exceptional year in 2022, marked by extreme and contrasting weather conditions. After a sunny, dry, but rather cool first quarter and April, bud break occurred at a rather late date, on April 12.

The beginning of the year was marked by cool temperatures and a significant rainfall deficit, with March monthly rainfall representing only two-thirds of the normal and almost 30% more sunshine. Some light frosts were recorded in April without significant impact on the harvest.

May will be long remembered. It was marked by persistent heat, drought, and very high sunshine, leading to rapid and favorable flowering. The cooling temperatures and rain around May 23 allowed normal vegetation growth. Full flowering was reached on average on May 28.

June and July were hot and sunny. June also saw sustained rainy periods, accompanied by significant and localized storms, with a monthly total of 143 mm, making it the wettest month since 1964. July, however, was dry with only 7.7 mm of rain on average and temperatures above seasonal averages.

August was contrasting, marked by a significant water deficit. After one of the hottest starts of the year and normal cumulative rainfall, harvest began on August 22. Grape maturity evolved very quickly thanks to some rain between August 15 and 25, producing high degrees and very low acidity. However, berry weight remained very low and continued to decrease over the days.

Harvest took place in good conditions. Grapes were picked with beautiful maturity, high degree, low acidity, and beautiful color. Production volume remained very low, identical to the 2021 harvest for Beaujolais, while for Beaujolais Villages, the harvest was estimated at 45 hl/ha. The first 2022 wines are promising, with a beautiful deep ruby color, a nose of ripe fruits with jammy notes, and a silky, round mouthfeel with ripe tannins.
