An essential facet of the cultural and wine growing life of Bourgogne

Vineyard

Côte de Nuits
The estate comprises essentially crus from the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation and includes six Village appellations and nine Premier Cru appellations.

Climate

The climate has a continental influence: hot summers and dry autumns allow the grapes to ripen in ideal conditions. These climatic conditions encourage the development of sugars and the substances that give the grapes their colour.

Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges

History

The Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges are a winemakers' hospital that came into being at the end of the reign of Saint Louis IX of France and the advent of Robert III, Duke of Bourgogne. Founded in 1270, the Hospices were historically a quarantine hospital treating patients infected by leprosy. Unfortunately, the original building was completely destroyed during the civil and religious wars. Less well known than its illustrious neighbour, the Hospices de Beaune, the Hospices de Nuits were run on the model that had earned the former is great reputation, combining actual medical activity and a prestigious wine growing estate.

The Auction

Auctions at the Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges are held every year at the Château du Clos de Vougeot, the headquarters of the famous Brotherhood of the Chevaliers du Tastevin.

Date of the auction

The auction in Nuits-Saint-Georges is traditionally held on the second or third Sunday in March, depending on the date of the grape harvest.

The Charity Lot (Pièce des Présidents)

In order to pay tribute to the generosity of the donors, it was agreed to sell an auction lot for charity each year in favour of a charity devoted to a humanitarian or medical cause.

The Maison François Martenot and the Hospices de Nuits

Every year, the Maison François Martenot, owner of Maison Moillard, based historically in Nuits-Saint-Georges since 1850, participates in this auction. We bid at the auction on behalf of our clients. Oenologists who are experts in the Bourgogne wines of the Maison François Martenot advise and assist them prior to the auction to recommend wines in line with their expectations and needs. These are aged in our winery in Nuits-Saint-Georges before being bottled. Our packaging is in keeping with the quality of these great wines. The bottles are sealed with wax and sold in wooden cases.
